"Integration of Different Grid-Communities: The D-Grid Approach"
Abstract:
After a long preparation period, the German national grid
project finally started in September this year. It comprises five
independent Grid projects from the areas of high energy physics,
astrophysics, climate research, engineering, and medicine. Although
those Commmunity Grids have diverging objectives, the German Research
Ministry as main sponsor expects that a significant amount of synergy
will be extracted. This synergy shall later support other communities to
adopt Grid technologies for themselves. It is the main goal of a
separate integration project to help exploiting the common base by
generating an appropriate infrastructure and by supporting the various
communities in building a Grid based on commonly used concepts and
standards. In this talk, it will be discussed which Grid areas are
especially well suited for integration and how a common foundation can
be generated despite a large variety of restrictions and dependencies
within the various communities.

Abstract:
Industry frequently has a strained relationship with academia. Both should
be able to benefit from each other, but the opportunities to work together
often fail to generate anywhere near what potentially should be possible.
Much of this arises because the two groups don't understand each other's
agendas; or if you prefer what makes the other tick? This session aims to
provide a simple guide to the needs of the business and IT organisations.
At the end of this session, you will understand what drives organisations
and their decision-making processes, get a view of the general
'state-of-the-art' in industrial grid implementations and from this get a
view of what industry expects from research on grid computing in the
future.
