Coordination of standardisation efforts

Objectives

The objective of the Coordination of Standardisation Efforts Task is to coordinate ongoing and future European activities in the different relevant standardisation bodies (OGF, OASIS, W3C, etc), identify areas where Europe's role and impact has to be strengthened, exchange of information among the IST GRID projects to join forces of the standardisation efforts and to achieve a critical mass to support the European interests in the international standardisation bodies.

CoreGRID Contribution

Task 9.3 Co-ordination of standardisation efforts is led by FhG, the leading project on European level is NextGRID. The main activities in the report period have been the following:

  • FhG is collaborating with NextGRID – the leading project in Co-ordination of standardisation efforts on European level  - and is a member of the Grid Standards Coordination Group organised by NextGRID and chaired by Ph. Wieder (FZJ).

  • FhG was contributing to the CPC1-T3 document

  • W. Ziegler has participated in the first meeting of the Grid Standards Coordination Group in Aachen

  • W. Ziegler has participated in several teleconferences of the Grid Standards Coordination Group

  • In the Open Grid Forum several CoreGRID partners are continuously active:

    • R. Yahyapour (UNIDO) is area director of the Compute Area and member of the Grid Forum Steering Group.  The Compute Area is focused on the description and execution of computational tasks, and the scheduling and negotiation of grid resources

    • T. Kielmann (VUA) is member of the Grid Forum Steering Group for the eScience function.
He is overseeing the involvement of research applications in the standardisation process.

    • A. Merzky (VUA) is member of the Grid Forum Steering Group for the perations function.
He is in charge of providing technical infrastructure o the standardisation process.

    • M.Dalheimer (FHG) is co-chair of the OGSA Resource Selection Services working group which will provide protocols and interface definitions for the Selection Services portion of the Execution Management Services (EMS) part of the Open Grid Services Architecture

    • Ph. Wieder (FZJ) is co-chair of the Grid Scheduling Architecture research group which will define a scheduling architecture that supports cooperation between different scheduling instances for arbitrary Grid resources

    • R. Yahyapour (UNIDO) is co-chair of the Grid Scheduling Architecture research group which will define a scheduling architecture that supports cooperation between different scheduling instances for arbitrary Grid resources

    • W. Ziegler (FHG) has been a member of the GGF Programme Committee up to GGF15 preparing the meetings of the Global Grid Forum

    • Ph. Wieder (FZJ) is member of the Nomination Committees 2006 (NomCom) of the Open Grid Forum responsible for gathering, assessing and selection of candidates for open positions in the GGF

    • R. Yahyapour (UNIDO) has been member of the Nomination Committees 2004 (NomCom) of the Global Grid Forum responsible for gathering, assessing and selection of candidates for open positions in the GGF

    • W. Ziegler (FHG) has been member of the Nomination Committees 2003, 2004, 2005 (NomCom) of the Global Grid Forum responsible for gathering, assessing and selection of candidates for open positions in the GGF

    • T. Kielmann (VUA) is co-chair of the Application Developers and Users RG
(APPS-RG) which is providing a forum for application developers to interact with
      ongoing standardisation efforts.

    • T. Kielmann (VUA) is co-chair of the imple API for Grid Apps RG (SAGA-RG) which is
coordinating the activities leading to standardized grid API's.

    • A. Merzky (VUA) is co-chair of the imple API for Grid Applications Core Working Group
(SAGA-CORE-WG) which is currently developing an API for essential ("core") grid
      functionality.
