Institutes

The CoreGRID Network is operated as a virtual research centre (the CoreGRID research centre) made of six research institutes (CoreGRID research institutes), each of them dedicated on a particular domain. These domains were identified as of strategic importance to ensure a durable development and deployment of GRID infrastructures. In the proposal, research institutes are mapped onto workpackages to follow the standard guidelines. It is likely that such institutes would run for all the lifetime of the Network. These institutes are the following:

  • Institute on Knowledge and Data Management

    Institute leader: Domenico Talia

The overall objective of this institute is to improve integration of research activities in the fields of data management, knowledge discovery and GRID computing for providing knowledge-based GRID services for the Semantic GRID through a tight coordination of European researchers active in those areas.

  • Institute on Programming Model

    Institute leader: Marco Danelutto

The expected result of this institute will be the design of an innovative component model for the GRID, perfectly suited for large-scale, heterogeneous systems such as those that are found in GRID and P2P computing.

  • Institute on Architectural Issues

    Institute leader: Pareskevi Fragopoulou

The overall objective of this institute is to strengthen the integration of research and reduce its fragmentation in the field of architectural paradigms, designs and standards. Particular focus of WP4 will lie in the cooperation concerning designing scalable, adaptive and dependable GRID architectures and GRID services.

  • Institute on Grid Information, Resource and Workflow Monitoring Services

    Institute leader: Norbert Meyer

The primary objective of this institute is to study and provide general information and monitoring service for the underlying GRID management required by a "Next Generation GRID". The GRID management services considered here include GRID middleware (core) services and components as well as higher-level services and components on top of GRID middleware.

  • Institute on Resource Management and Scheduling

    Institute leader: Ramin Yahyapour

This institute addresses all relevant topics on scheduling and coordination for a common and generic solution for NGGs.

  • Institute on Grid Systems, Tools and Environments

    Institute leader: Vladimir Getov

This institute develops the design methodology of a generic component system that integrates application components, tools/system components, PSE/portal components, and infrastructure components.
